Will SK Hynix take over Magnachip's foundry business?
May 23- TW

SK hynix is weighing whether to acquire the foundry business and fabrication line of Magnachip, a local semiconductor manufacturing company, industry sources said Wednesday. The envisioned acquisition of the foundry business and factory of Magnachip in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province, is widely expected to enable the world's second-largest memory chipmaker to secure expanded output and bolster its competitiveness in the non-memory business amid the downturn in the memory chip market. "We are closely watching the situation related to the takeover battle of Magnachip, but nothing has been decided," an official from SK hynix said.

Infineon reportedly suspends shipments to Huawei
18 May 2019

German chipmaker Infineon has suspended shipments to Huawei Technologies, in a sign that Washington’s crackdown on the Chinese tech company is beginning to hamper its supplies beyond the United States, Nikkei Asian Review reported on Monday.  Infineon had no immediate comment. Infineon’s annual sales to Huawei amount to $100 million or less, Nikkei said.

FocalTech margin returns to positive

Losses totaled NT$194 million (US$6.22 million) in the three-month period ending in March, compared with losses of NT$2.65 billion in the prior quarter and net profit of NT$10 million in the first quarter of last year, the company said in a financial statement.

Gross margin last quarter climbed to 20.96 percent, compared with 8.35 percent in the prior quarter and 20.1 percent a year earlier, it said.  

FocalTech expects momentum to grow quarterly in the remainder of the year, thanks to better capacity availability and clients’ adoption of next-generation integrated driver and controller (IDC) chips, he said.
